| Throughout the ages,
there have been so-called "private" revelations, some of which have been
recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however,
to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete
Christ's definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a
certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these
revelations whatever constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his
saints to the Church. Private Revelation in Christian theology is distinct from universal or public revelation, which came to its completion with the death of the final Apostle, Saint John. While public revelation is the transmission of all universal Truth for and to be believed by all the faithful (e.g. God is three Persons -- the Trinity -- and the Second Person, God the Son, became man), private revelation is not 'required' to be believed to be a Christian in good standing (though it can be argued that if Jesus, the Blessed Mother, or another Saint/Angel has been sent by God to convey a message, we ought to pay attention) and can never add to nor negate public revelation. Focusing primarily here on private revelation that deals with end times prophecy, we find the most common messenger -- even more so than Jesus Christ Himself, being His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Of curious note is the fact that the frequency of these Marian apparitions has increased exponentially following the French Revolution. In many ways, this should not be surprising, as even many experts will acknowledge that this was a war (even a contrived war) of a different sort. In many ways the French Revolution was a nexus, or turning point, of western civilization, which started a path of hostility towards religion in general (see more on the Reign of Terror and Dechristianisation of France), establishing a false dichotomy between Faith and reason.
A 'specific' relationship with 2012 claims is
dubious at best -- though at the same time, it cannot be dismissed outright -- "The
heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands"
(Psalm 19:1) God clearly spoke to the Magi through celestial/astronomical
placement and phenomena, and being that "He determines the number of stars
and calls them each by name" (Psalm 147:4) it is within the Creator's power
to speak of His works and plans in anyway he chooses. This is not in
anyway the promotion of astrology, which suggests the celestial movements affect
and/or determine our individual behaviors; the possibility considered here these
celestial bodies and events may "declare" or "reflect" God's work. A

A Marian apparition is an event in which the Virgin Mary is believed to have supernaturally appeared to one or more persons. They are often given names based on the town in which they were reported, or on the sobriquet which was given to Mary on the occasion of the apparition. They have been interpreted in religious terms as theophanies. Apparitions sometimes are reported to recur at the same site over an extended period of time. In the majority of Marian apparitions only a few people report having witnessed the apparition. An exception to this is at Zeitoun, where thousands claimed to have seen her over a period of three years.

Marian Apparition - FatimaOur Lady of Fátima is a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary with respect to reported apparitions of her to three shepherd children at Fátima in Portugal on the 13th day of six consecutive months in 1917, starting on May 13. The three children were Lúcia Santos and her cousins, siblings Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The events at Fatima gained particular fame due to their elements of prophecy and eschatology, particularly with regard to possible world war and the conversion of Russia. The reported apparitions at Fatima were officially declared "worthy of belief" by the Catholic Church. Of particular interest for current times are the three "secrets" which were given to the children, specifically the controversial "Third Secret", which was not revealed until May 13, 2000 -- though there has been great dispute as to whether the entirety of the secret was revealed. Marian Apparition - AkitaOur Lady of Akita is the title of Marian apparitions reported in 1973 by Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa in the remote area of Yuzawadai, near the city of Akita in Japan. The messages emphasize prayer and penance. Sister Sasagawa stated that the Virgin Mary told her: "Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary. I alone am able still to save you from the calamities which approach." A unique element of this apparition is that the entire nation of Japan was able to witness the tears streaming from he statue of the Blessed Mother on national television. Of particular note in this apparition, the Blessed Mother warned, ". . . if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before." Referring specifically to trials within the Catholic Church, she stated, "The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres (other priests). Churches and altars will be sacked. The Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord."

Marian Apparition - GarabandalBetween 1961-1965 Our Lady is said to have appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel to four girls, Mary Loly, Conchita, Jacinta and Mary Cruz, in the tiny village of San Sebastian de Garabandal in northern Spain. The apparitions have not yet been approved by the Church but have not been condemned either. There are four prophecies given by the Blessed Mother at Garabandal, (1) Following a time of tribulation there will be a worldwide warning in which everyone will see the state of their soul before God. We will see the damage caused by our sins and the good we have omitted to do. The warning will come when the tribulation will be at its worst and when the warning will be most needed. (2) Within a year after the warning a miracle will take place in Garabandal. It will be announced eight days beforehand by one of the girls who knows the date. It can be seen and televised and all the sick who will be present will be healed. (3) A permanent visible sign will be left at Garabandal, a sign for unbelievers. (4) If we still do not convert, a great chastisement will befall the world. Marian Apparition - MedjugorjeOn June 24, 1981, six Croatian children in the small town of Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina experienced an apparition of the Blessed Mother who did not initially speak, but held a little child in her arms. Since then, the Blessed Mother has continued to appear daily (though now at different frequencies and times for each of the now grown children) with messages focused on prayer and repentence. The visionaries report that the Blessed Mother has ten secrets which she is revealing to them which most understand to be in regards of difficult times to come. A few of the visionaries have already received all ten secrets, while others have received only 8 or 9. There has been great controversy surrounding this particular apparition, with incredibly deep complexities at play in the matter. While the local Bishop has not been supportive of Our Lady of Medjugorje (in fact, he has been outright hostile towards it), the Holy See (Catholic Church) established an investigative commission on March 17, 2010, effectively removing jurisdiction for the determination on the apparition from the local Church authorities.
